A Child Among the Dead
Her mother’s last act
Van follows a child’s crying into the slaves’ kitchen and finds Yuna alive inside an oven, protected by her mother’s body.
A second survivor
Yuna bears a bite mark like Van’s. Her survival binds their fates together, though neither can yet understand why they escaped the fever that killed everyone around them.
A Place in the Family

Learning to Belong
Care without questions
Van carries Yuna into a new household, where Kiya and the other women welcome her. The child gradually learns their words, routines, food, and warmth.
A changed future
Van once imagined himself as a man already bound for death. Yuna’s dependence unsettles that resignation: protecting her asks him to imagine a future he had not wanted.
The Child Runs with the Pack

The Pull of the Beasts
Shared transformation
During an attack on the pyuika corral, Yuna responds to the approaching beasts as Van does, sensing and moving with them in a way that is not ordinary.
Van refuses to let go
She runs after the pack, drawn by a powerful connection. Van catches her and holds her fast, choosing their human bond over the dangerous pull of belonging to the animals.
